Chapter Eleven

A plan whirred through Drew’s mind. He’d been waiting for a little action, and now, his wish was coming true. Breaking into Nevşehir Cultural Museum and retrieving the Sister’s bones would be a piece of cake compared to some of the hijinks he’d pulled during his stint with the Delta Force.

A twinge in his gut reminded him to detail it out anyhow, take it slow, work out the kinks. Jerusha might not be too worried about their shadows disappearing, but something about it bothered Drew. He just hadn’t figured out the whats and whys yet. Having to complete weeks worth of planning in a single day didn’t help.

First thing after they got back to the hotel room, he scoured it for bugs, dumped them in the sink, and ran water over them. Jaybird leaned a shoulder against the doorframe, her bright gaze steady. “You sure that’s a good idea?”

“Yup. We need privacy so we can work out what we’re gonna do. Long as one of us stays put, the bugs won’t be replaced.”

One corner of her mouth tilted up and her half-smile hit him with the force of a Mack truck on the front end of a tornado. Damn, she was beautiful, and she was his.

“You’re manly, adorable, and you have a plan. How did I get so lucky?”

He dried his hands off and smirked. “You ain’t seen nothing yet, Jaybird.”

Drew built a fire in the room’s fireplace and they settled in front of it, shoulder to shoulder on a low-backed chaise as he outlined a rough plan, refining it with her input. They scoured the Internet for more detailed blueprints of the museum’s interior, plotted escape routes using Google Earth, and worked out the dozens of details that went into planning a robbery.

Did he like doing it on such short notice? Fuck, no. Spur of the moment was fine. When you were loose and ready for anything, your body reacted before your mind could think. Ninety-nine percent of the time, that worked out great.

This halfway shit really worried him, though. They didn’t have time for detailed surveillance, didn’t have time to think it through, and they’d scrounged up just enough info to be dangerous. Getting comfortable in the job was just as deadly as going in blind. He had a shit ton enough experience to know a half thought out plan was way less than ideal.

One of them stayed in the hotel room at all times, guarding against another intrusion while the other hunted down the items they needed to pull off their caper. Drew spent that night surveilling the museum from nearby buildings, marking off the guards’ schedules, making notes on their faces and postures.

None of the guards he observed carried guns. That didn’t mean they lacked access to weapons. It was something he and Jerusha were gonna have to watch for as they worked. Hopefully, this would be a simple in-and-out. Slide in through the back door, retrieve the bones out of storage, exit the way they’d come, and nobody the wiser.
